Claudia Llosa's debut feature film is the history of Madeinusa, a 14-year-old girl who lives in a remote small town and dreams of the world outside her village. She lives with her father Cayo and her sister Chale since her mother fled to the capital. Cayo is the local mayor and arranges that Madeinusa represents the Virgin Mary during the eastern activities.
During those Holy-days, the people from the town believe that God is dead and sin does not exist, so they are allowed to do anything they want. At that time Salvador, a young geologist from Lima, comes to the town and captivates Madeinusa, who sees him as her ticket to freedom, sacrifying her virginity to him and changing the course of events.
Madeinusa is a film that impacts the spectator with a mix of fantasy and reality of people's beliefs showing at the same time how strong the influence of the modern world is, reaching even the most remotes places.
