The Odyssey of the Potato : An exhibition in celebration of The International Year of the Potato

To commemorate the International Year of the Potato in 2008, the Peruvian Embassy and the International Potato Centre in Peru (CIP), have prepared a traveling exhibition that illustrates the history, evolution and impact of the potato in today’s world. The exhibition, entitled “The Odyssey of the Potato”, will be shown from the13th to the 22nd of June at the Hay’s Galleria (1 Battle Bridge Lane, Southwark, London, SE1 2HD) from 10.00am to 10.00pm.

The purpose of this initiative, sponsored by the Peruvian government, is to increase the awareness and inform the public of the importance of the potato as a world food staple. Indeed, the potato is the third most important food crop in the world today after rice and wheat. It is grown in more than 130 countries and consumed by over a billion people worldwide.

“The Odyssey of the Potato” exhibit has been traveling through different cities in Europe and Scandinavia since February and is one among many activities developed to celebrate 2008 as the International Year of the Potato (IYP), which was designated by the United Nations following a proposal made by Peru in 2005.

The exhibition is comprised of informative panels, life-size displays and colorful photos that support a timeline that tracks the progress of the potato throughout the ages. This includes: its domestication; its importance in pre-Columbian cultures; its discovery, introduction and dissemination within Europe; its wider dissemination to other parts of the world; and its importance today for food security and economic growth in the developing world.

In addition to reporting the rich history, origin and importance of the potato worldwide, this exhibit will also serve as a platform to link national IYP activities and provide the opportunity to discuss topics of contemporary importance such as potato biodiversity, development and sharing of global public goods, intellectual property rights, emerging pests and diseases, and more.
