'Chicha tu madre' (2006)
Dir. Gianfranco Quattrini
Countries: Peru / Argentina
96 min.

The film takes place in Lima and tells the story of Julio César, a 37-year-old taxi driver and a passionate enthusiast of tarot reading. When he finds that his 16-year-old daughter is pregnant and finally accepts that his marriage is over, he decides to change his ‘destiny’. Through the tarot, he starts to make decisions for his future and his daughter’s, involving him into a series of unexpected situations.

'Chicha tu madre' is an urban film that shows the real face of the ‘chicha’ culture in Lima. Chicha is a popular term used in Peru to describe the cultural results in urban societies after four decades of strong migrations from the country to the city, especially to the capital. Although not the same, the closest terms to understand the meaning of Chicha would be ‘kitsch’ / ‘tacky’ and the word has become very helpful to describe a big part of today’s Lima’s colourful personality.

Cast: Jesús Aranda, Tula Rodríguez, Pablo Brichta, Karen Dejo, Miguel Iza
