Despite national legislation and international agreements to protect cultural property, over the last few illicit trade of Peruvian historical objects and art works have been reaching levels never seen before.
Only between 2004 and 2006, more than 5,000 cultural and natural objects were illegally traded, including thefts from churches and museums, and excavations and looting of archaeological sites.
In light of this situation, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has released the Red List of Peruvian Antiquities at Risk (2007), containing 18 categories of Peruvian cultural artefacts which are particularly at risk from looting and international illicit art trade. This list is the fifth in the ICOM Red List series and has been drawn up with the collaboration of the Peruvian National Institute of Culture (INC), Peruvian universities and international experts in Peruvian cultural heritage.
The Red List is an appeal to museums, action companies, collectors and art dealers to carry out the necessary verifications for any purchase of cultural antiquities. It is also an instrument to help police and customs officers to identify objects passing through the art market.
